About dns2tcp: yeah I know... but having only met haughty people at HSC, I didn't feel like advertising them.

Apart from that, your remarks on DNS tunneling are very interesting, especially the fact that it can be an annoyance to the other users (only when everybody uses the same DNS server, right?). It's not obvious and should indeed be pointed out; I'll add it to the blog post now.

Speaking of DNS tunneling, there is also "dns2tcp" from HSC.

However, DNS tunneling is not only utterly inefficient, but also severely degrades network performance for legitimate users.

The next time I catch someone using DNS tunneling on a WiFi hotspot, I'll use my super secret skills against those crappy pieces of software.

Most DNS tunnels are single-threaded/single-user, cannot withstand a legitimate DNS request (NSTX fails with exploitable condition if I remember well), etc.

Nice, didn't know about Tektonic... I'm always interested in recommendations on hosting services.

About SSH under Cygwin, in case you don't know it already there is a lightwight, ready-to-use (so you can just keep the .exe on a USB key for example) opensource graphical SSH client called PuTTY. It's available on most operating systems, even Windows Mobile and Symbian!

Great article. I use Tektonic for my "stepping stone" (among other things).

ssh -D 8080 is so simple, and when in a Windows environment I have installed cywgin and use ssh from the CLI.

nice! i need to breakdown and get a colo and that will be my base for all ssh (to liberate my home network) and redirects etc. I may get bluehost (sup support ssh) and maybe a slicehost to round it out and have some redundancy. keep on writing!
